Prospec and DDA (Disabled Discrimination Act)

Representatives of Prospec's Product Development Team are meeting with Doncaster Disabled Peoples Alliance (DDPA) to hear first hand about issues of disabled access and discuss Prospecs latest improvements to make their cubicles and lockers more accessible.

Prospec Limited has always been aware of and involved with issues of disabled access in changing and washroom areas. The company has complied with the latest UK guidelines and has made unique advances in disabled access with the company’s American subsidiary, Prospec Contracts Inc., to comply with the more detailed American Disability Act (ADA) provisions that relate to the design installation of cubicles and lockers.

Prospec organised meetings with members of the DDPA with physical, visual and sensory impairments, who regularly visit leisure centres, gyms and public WC's, to hear about their own experiences of accessibility in washrooms and changing rooms. By gaining greater insight into the issues that regularly affect people, Prospec can work towards developing products that both meet the new guidelines and have been approved by the users themselves.

The Doncaster Disabled Peoples Alliance is an active group that works towards increasing recognition, equality and access for people with disabilities in South Yorkshire. The products that were demonstrated to the DDPA as part of the Prospec consultation include a revised coin return lock with a proposed enlarged number plate, and a Marathon Classic Cubicles sample with compliant latch and grab handle. The issues that will be discussed will include cubicle widths, locker heights, plus optimal colours for those with visual impairments.

Jim Owen, Prospec's Product Development Manager said "Prospec has always worked closely with architects, clients and designers to offer bespoke solutions when approached with an issue of access. We are delighted to be able to consult with the Doncaster Disabled Peoples Alliance as we feel that the best evaluation of our products comes from those who will be using them on a regular basis. We hope to be able to incorporate some of the ideas and suggestions into future designs".

Andy Smith of the Doncaster Disabled peoples Alliance said "We are very pleased that Prospec has requested a consultation with us to discuss their product developments. The new DDA offers some good guidelines for the construction industry but it is the users themselves who can really evaluate what are the most comfortable and easy to use specifications. We would urge other companies to follow Prospecs lead and consult with disabled groups in their area".
